Directories

The following databases allow you to build a list of companies, both public and private, based on certain criteria (state, city, sales, etc.).

Some resources in this category provide more comprehensive information than others.

One of the major uses of these databases is to be able to very quickly gauge if there's a concentration of a particular type of business/industry within a particular geographic region.

Recommended Resources

Data Axle Reference Solutions (formerly ReferenceUSA)
Provides access to directory information on U.S. and Canadian business and residential locations. An excellent resource for finding the name, location, size, and contact information of specific companies.
Mergent Intellect
Select the ADVANCED SEARCH option underneath the main search bar when entering the database to construct lists of companies by a range of criteria including geography, size, industry, revenue, and more.
Business Insights: Essentials
Select 'Advanced Search' under the search bar, then click on 'Companies' from SEARCH OPTIONS. Entering a NAICS code will return you a list of companies that classify themselves in that industry.
Nexis Uni (formerly Lexis Nexis Academic)
Select 'Business' under the 'Discover topics' heading at the bottom of the page. This will take you to a page with multiple options relating to company research. Under 'Company Dossier' there is a link to 'Create a Company List.'
ThomasNet
Provides information on companies, products, and relevant suppliers in North America. This is a useful tool for understanding the supply chain of a specific product. Capable of building a list of suppliers by a variety of searchable criteria.
