Public Performance Rights (PPR)

"Public Performance Rights" (PPRs) are the legal rights to publicly show a film or other media.  PPRs are not needed for normal home viewing, or for showing films in the context of face-to-face teaching as part of the regular curriculum.  PPRs generally are required for group viewing outside of a class setting, however. 

If an individual or group wishes to screen a film in a setting requiring PPRs, some publishers/distributors handling such licenses are  Swank Motion PicturesCriterion Pictures, Kino Lorber, and the Motion PIcture Licensing Corporation.  Notre Dame students from recognized student groups can contact the Student Activities Office for information and assistance with PPRs. 

Library Videos with Public Performance Rights

PPRs can be expensive, and they were not included with most library video purchases.  Many documentary filmmakers automatically include them in their library pricing, however, and other films were specifically purchased with PPRs.
