Hours of Operation

If your call starts on the hour or half-hour (or may run past your reservation end time), we strongly recommend booking the Studio a half-hour in advance to allow a buffer.

To optimize sound quality when using the external Yeti microphone and pop filter, do a few brief test recordings to determine which of the following options work best for your purpose:

  • Speak as closely to the microphone as possible while maintaining appropriate posture
  • The GAIN knob on the microphone should be positioned at
    • 9 or 10 o'clock to minimize background noise pick-up (for e.g., recording voiceover files)
    • at 12 or 2 o'clock if you need louder audio quality and find some background noise to be acceptable (most other user needs)
  • The microphone PATTERN knob should be positioned in the third slot (looks kind of like a heart)
  • In system preferences > select Sound > turn the input volume on the Yeti all the way up
  • If a recording does not contain audio, ensure Mute is not enabled

  • Always perform test calls with the same settings/conditions you plan to use for your "real" call in advance.
  • Use the iMac's native webcam, microphone, and speakers by either selecting them in Skype (Preferences > Audio/Video), or, by unplugging the microphone from the iMac.

  • If you wish to use the VOIP phone to dial off-campus, you must use your own authorization code (issued by your department/unit) - ND faculty/staff, please have your authorization code handy!
  • To receive a call, direct the caller to dial (574) 631-7844.

Please note that although the Sound Studio is ventilated, the temperature rises over time. Users may wish to consider wearing layers that can be removed if they find warmer temperatures uncomfortable, or if they plan to use the Studio for more than 30 minutes at a time.
