Making StoryMaps

Creating Your First StoryMap

Log in

arcgis online home page

  • Remember to use your new ArcGIS login that will look like this: yournetid_NotreDame

Navigate to StoryMaps

Create a Story

  • Click the green New Story button > Start from scratch

  • Title field
  • Optional Subtitle field
  • Add a cover image or video

Note the Navigation Options

  • Design
  • Preview (note: this will undo your history)
  • Publish
  • Miscellaneous options
    • Add to Favorites
    • Story Settings
    • Duplicate
    • Delete

Designing Your StoryMap

Design Menu

  • Change the Cover look
  • Choose to display or hide the Navigation and Credits sections
    • Turn on Navigation
    • Leave on Credits
  • Change the font and color scheme Theme

StoryMap Content

Add a Cover Image

  • You can Upload or Link to images
  • Click the Gear icon for Image Options

  • Display: type or paste citation information into the Attribution field > Save

  • Properties: type or paste alt text into the Alternative Text field > Save

Add a Paragraph / Heading

  • Click the Tell your story... text to start entering text 

  • Type "Introduction"
  • After typing Introduction, click the text to bring up a menu of options you can change: Headings, lists, quotes, bold, italics, hyperlink, color options, and left/right justifications 
  • Make Introduction into Heading 1
  • Type "Body" and make it into Heading 1, also
  • Type "Conclusion" and make it into Heading 1, also
  • Your example stotrymap should look like this:

Add an Image

  • Let's add an image to the Introduction section

  • Add > Image > Link > https://tile.loc.gov/storage-services/service/pnp/stereo/1s30000/1s33000/1s33200/1s33204v.jpg > Add

  • Click to type a caption in below the image
  • Click the property box that appears at the top of the image to change the justification of the image and update the Image Options (where you can add attribution information and alt text)

Add a Map > New Express Map

  • Let's add an Express Map to the Body section
  • Add > Map > New Express Map

  • Search by location > Tizimin > Enter > Add to map
  • Search by location > Merida > Enter > Add to map

  • Place Map

Other Content Types (Buttons, Swipes, Timelines, Slideshows, Sidecars)

Publishing & Preserving Your StoryMap

PUBLISHING YOUR STORYMAP

  • Private
  • Organization
  • Public

PRESERVING YOUR STORYMAP

  • Print Preview > Print will export a PDF of your StoryMap for your records
     
  • If you used a document to outline and draft your content before adding to the platform, that will also preserve your content if you need to reconstruct it in the future
