Overview

Welcome to Mary Wollstonecraft at Notre Dame. This site is dedicated to an ongoing National Endowment for the Humanities' Scholarly Editions Project (2024-2027) which seeks to produce the first standard edition of Mary Wollstonecraft's two iconic works of political philosophy: A Vindication of the Rights of Men (1790) and A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792). This 2024-2027 NEH Scholarly Editions grant was awarded to Nancy Johnson (Professor of English, SUNY-New Paltz) and Eileen M. Hunt (Professor of Political Science, University of Notre Dame).

On this site, you will find a description of the project and a sample of its ongoing progress, including editing samples, OCR-text files, and scans of the editions of the Rights of Men and the Rights of Woman owned by the Hesburgh Library. You will also find a biography of Mary Wollstonecraft, resources pertinent to Wollstonecraft studies, Wollstonecraft-related events and exhibits at the University of Notre Dame, a catalogue of Wollstonecraft editions owned by the Hesburgh Library's Rare Books and Special Collections, and a compilation of links and media related to the project. Additionally, this site features Eileen M. Hunt's ongoing blog, which posts monthly articles about the process and project of editing the Rights of Men and the Rights of Woman

This site was created in collaboration between Eileen M. Hunt and Anne Elise Crafton (2024-2025 Rare Books and Special Collections Postdoctoral Research Fellow).
