The Hesburgh Libraries has negotiated with selected publishers to secure article publication discounts for Notre Dame authors. Below you will find a list of publishers who offer discounts to Notre Dame Authors, and brief descriptions of their discounts.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

Who is covered?

Corresponding authors from the University of Notre Dame.

Which journals are included?

Science Advances

What is the discount?

10% off the journal's article processing charge (APC), with an additional 4% discount available for AAAS members.

How can I apply for this discount?

Science Advances uses RightsLink from the Copyright Clearance Center to process APC payments. Please see AAAS's Licensing and Charges page for more detail.

Which licenses are available?

AAAS offers Creative Commons licenses CC BY or CC BY-NC. Authors retain copyright, but must sign a license granting AAAS exclusive rights to use and authorize use of their contribution.

What is the business model behind this arrangement?

University of Notre subscriptions to AAAS journals, including Science.

American Chemical Society (ACS)

Who is covered?

Corresponding authors from the University of Notre Dame.

Which journals are covered?

All ACS journals included in the ACS AuthorsChoice program, except ACS Central Science, ACS Omega, or JACS Au.

What is the discount?

$250 discount, with additional discounts for ACS members based on license chosen/selected availability after 12 months.

How can I apply for this discount?

Upon acceptance of an article, the corresponding author receives an email with a link to RightsLink. The affiliation discount of $250 is automatically applied if the author's institution subscribes to the ACS Journals package. If the author is a current member of the America Chemical Society, they are eligible to receive an additional $500 discount. To redeem the membership discount, the author should enter their ACS Member ID into the appropriate field of the Apply Discounts section of the RightsLink platform. Which licenses are available?

For manuscripts published as open access, the default license is a CC-BY-NC-ND Creative Commons license. An author can publish under a CC-BY license by selecting that option during the open access ordering process. An additional charge of $1000 will apply if a CC-BY license is required. Authors will also be required to complete and sign a Journal Publishing Agreement, which will be included in the acceptance email.

BioMed Central/Springer Open

Who is covered?

Corresponding authors from the University of Notre Dame

Any SpringerOpen or BMC journal

What is the discount?

15% off the journal's article processing charge (APC)

How can I apply for this discount?

You will be directed to instructions for obtaining the discount when you submit your work for publication. Please be aware that some article types, such as letters, are not eligible for the discount. 

Which licenses are available?

BMC offers CC-BY 4.0 Creative Commons licenses for articles published in any BMC or SpringerOpen journal. The author retains copyright and grants BMC a license to publish the article. For more information, see here.

International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE)

SPIE journals included in SPIE Digital Library.

What is the discount?

25% off article processing charges (APCs) for SPIE journals. More information on this program can be found here.

How can I apply for this discount?

The manuscript submission form includes a question about available discounts, and authors should choose the option for a discount associated with the university's institutional subscription to SPIE Digital Library. When the paper is accepted for publication, SPIE staff will send a link to the shopping cart with that specific discount applied.

Which licenses are available?

SPIE offers CC-BY 4.0 Creative Commons licenses for articles published in Gold OA journals and for SPIE Author Choice (hybrid) journals. The author retains copyright and grants SPIE a non-exclusive license to publish the article. For more information, see here.

MDPI

Who is covered?

Corresponding authors from the University of Notre Dame.

Which journals are covered?

All MDPI journals. See here for current list.

What is the discount?

10% off the journal's article processing charge (APC).

How can I apply for this discount?

Authors will be responsible for payments directly through MDPI and will be asked to register with MDPI as part of the submission process. More detail can be found on the Instructions for Authors page.

Please  note that according to the Business Terms and Conditions MDPI dated 3 October 1997, authors whose articles are accepted for publication agree to the APC amount and are bound to pay the APC per section 3.4 of the terms.

Which licenses are available?

All articles in MDPI are published under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license. Authors retain copyright. No additional contract or license is required by an MDPI journal.

National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

What is the discount?

How can I apply for this discount?

PNAS has partnered with the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) to process APC payments. Authors will be sent an email that includes a link to the CCC payment system. During the payment process, they can use the APPLY DISCOUNTS button, using the discount code provided by PNAS. For more information, authors can contact PNAS directly at PNASaubilling@nas.edu.

PNAS offers CC-BY-NC-ND or CC-BY Creative Commons licenses for authors whose funders or institutions require it. Authors retain copyright and grant a nonexclusive license to publish. See here for more information.
