Travellers' Accounts of Ireland

This is a way to search primary sources. Use the collection in Hathi Trust, Ireland: Descriptions. To use a collection, you may be required to log in. Use the 'Log In' button at the top right, and select your institution (the University of Notre Dame).

This collection draws together journals and descriptions, mostly be people who travelled around Ireland. You can carry out an initial search to identify books that contain your search terms, and then carry out a further search in each book that you select.

E.g.

This narrows down the collection to the sixteen books that contain the placename 'Clontarf', so it is easy to select those of interest -- perhaps books published between 1820 and 1860, and a second search will show the context for each occurrence.

Above is an example from Asenath Nicholson, Ireland's Welcome to the Stranger in 1844 & 1845 (1847).

Find more information on these books and other travellers' accounts in the library guide, Travels in Ireland -- A Guide and Bibliography.
