This work is intended as a handbook to the traditional Fenian literature of Ireland and Scotland from the earliest times to the modern period. As a synthesis for the use of student and layman alike, it follows in the footsteps of previous works, particularly those by Gerard Murphy, Alfred Nutt, and Kuno Meyer. The present volume differs chiefly from earlier introductions with regard to footnotes: an attempt has been made to name all the major Fenian narratives and collections, to cite all the cycle’s constituent texts and collections, and to quote and reference the modern scholarship on these sources as a bibliographical guide.

First published in Irish in 1918, this is a collection of seven stories by Pádraic Ó Conaire (1882-1928), the most innovative writer to emerge from the Gaelic Revival. Although not directly concerned with the events of the 1916 Rising, the stories deal with the ways in which the revolt intervenes in the lives of ordinary Irish men and women. Arugably the first important fictional response to the Rising, this is the first time all seven stories have been translated into English and published together.

This book provides an in-depth study of translation and translators in nineteenth-century Ireland, using translation history to widen our understanding of cultural exchange in the period. It paints a new picture of a transnational Ireland in contact with Europe, offering fresh perspectives on the historical, political and cultural debates of the era. Employing contemporary translation theories and applying them to Ireland's socio-historical past, the author offers novel insights on a large range of disciplines relating to the country, such as religion, gender, authorship and nationalism.

Analysis of the linguistic practices and ideologies of "new speakers" specifically in an Irish language context. The book introduces the theoretical foundations of the new speaker framework as it manifests itself in the Irish setting, describes its historical precedents, and traces its evolution to today. The book then draws upon a rich set of data and research methods, including participant observation and ethnographic fieldwork to examine the new speaker phenomenon in Irish.

Papers on various aspects, mainly linguistic, of the present day situation of the Celtic languages of Britain and Ireland. The papers were given at the Third International Conference on Minority Languages, which was held in Galway, Ireland in June 1986.
