Players spin to advance pawns along a spiral-shaped course replicating the globe-circling trip accomplished by Nellie Bly. Seventy-two illustrated squares describe Bly’s location on each day of her journey. Some squares are marked with instructions that send players forward or back along the course. The first player arrive at the 73rd space, representing a return to ‘New Jersey,’ wins. EPH 5044

One game for two to four players copyrighted and published by J. H. Singer, New York. Players spin to advance yacht-shaped pieces across an illustrated board designed to represent the navigation of a vessel through a cove and around an island. The first player completing a lap and returning to the start/finish flag wins. EPH 5047

One board game for two players designed to simulate the annual Yale vs. Harvard football game. The box cover depicts about 12 players in a scrum on a football field. Players wear either blue for Yale or red for Harvard, and the cover features Harvard and Yale pennants on the top left and the top right of the box. The box also features a referee watching the action, a grandstand filled with fans, and a single goalpost.MSSP 10108

One strategy-based board game for two players produced by McLoughlin Brothers. The game board consists of concentric rings of colored cells, surrounded by illustrated jungle scenes. The object of the game is to determine whether the first player’s game pieces representing a tiger and its 6 cubs, or the second player’s game pieces representing an elephant and its 6 ‘beaters’ will be first to move from the outermost ring to occupy the ‘jungle’ at the center of the board. One simple race board game for two to four players, manufactured by McLoughlin Brothers, New York. Designed for younger children, players spin and advance wooden pieces along a grid of numbered squares to play. Colorful illustrations including monkeys, a clown, leaping dogs, and a tightrope walker denote squares that offer advancement or setback along the players’ route. EPH 5047

One simple racing board game for two or four players manufactured by Parker Brothers, Salem, Massachusetts as a part of its ‘Adventure Series.’ The game’s box lid depicts Teddy Roosevelt leading the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War in Cuba. The game board within is designed to represent the battlefield at San Juan Hill and is marked with ten possible routes from ‘camp’ to ‘victory.’ Players spin to advance wooden pawns along chosen routes. The first player to reach ‘victory’ wins the game. EPH 5050

One game for two to four players, manufactured by McLoughlin Brothers, New York. Players spin and move pieces across a board designed to represent the advancement of an errand boy from ‘applicant’ to ‘banker.’ Players are able to advance through the game when landing on numbered spaces corresponding with virtues (such as ‘Honesty’ and ‘Confidence,’) or job promotions, and are penalized when landing on numbered spaces corresponding with vices (such as ‘Gambling’ and ‘Drunkenness’). The first player who reaches square 44, depicting a well-dressed banker, wins the game. EPH 5046

One game for two to four players manufactured by McLoughlin Brothers, New York. Players spin to advance wooden pawns along an oblong path printed on a board. The board is designed to resemble a patchwork quilt with fourteen numbered, illustrated ‘patches’ each depicting rural pastimes such as gathering chicken eggs and husking corn. When players land on a space corresponding with one of these pastimes, they collect a bone marker piece. Once all of the markers have been collected, the player with the highest number wins. An extra marker and two additional pawns are included in this set. EPH 5049

The Hawaiian Souvenir Playing Cards Collection consists of one deck of commercially printed playing cards published by the Honolulu-based Wall, Nichols Co., Ltd, and copyrighted by the U.S. Playing Card Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. The copyright was registered in 1901, and this was a later version published in about 1910 of the Hawaiian Souvenir Playing Cards. The deck includes the traditional 52 cards in addition to a Joker and an information card. Each of the playing cards includes an image in the center of the card related to the culture, business, politics, buildings, people, or natural environment of Hawaii. Each of the four Kings and Queens picture historical Kings and Queens of Hawaii, and the Jack of Spades depicts famous Hawaiian swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku. Issued at a time when Hawaii was a colonial territory of the United States, many images emphasize the exotic nature of Hawaiian people and Hawaiian culture and seek to entice tourism from the mainland United States. British-made patriotic manual dexterity marble maze board game depicting the beginning of World War One and charting an imagined British and Allied military campaign to capture Berlin, the German capital. The object of the game is to maneuver a small metal ball around a recessed playing board and avoid holes distributed around the course. Players win the game by navigating the ball around the course to “Berlin” at the top of the board. The start of the course is labeled “To Berlin” with an arrow pointing the direction. The holes are labeled with numbers and the names of German cities to be conquered or obstacles to be overcome. The top of the game board features the words “British Design” and “British Made.” The game board is encased in a wooden frame under glass. MSSP 10091

British-made patriotic manual dexterity marble maze board game using football (soccer) imagery to simulate trench warfare on the western front in World War One. The object of the game is to maneuver a small metal ball around a recessed playing board and avoid holes distributed around the course. Players win the game by navigating the ball around the course and into the goal which is guarded by a larger hole. Most of the holes on the course are accompanied by caricatures of German military commanders: with “The Kaiser” as the goal mouth. The game board is encased in a wooden frame under glass. MSSP 10092

One board game for two players designed to simulate a boxing match. The metal board depicts a three-dimensional 8-inch by 8-inch boxing ring with ropes also made of metal. The game includes one metal and wood red spinning top and one metal and wood blue spinning top. The blue corner is marked with a card reading, “In this corner: Dempsey,” and the red corner is marked with a card reading, “In this corner: Tunney.” The game was copyrighted in 1922 by the LaVelle Manufacturing Company. One board game for any even number of players designed to simulate football game play. The board is printed in green yellow, red, and black, and marked to resemble a football field. Players spin a dial marked with numbers from 1-12. Tables on the game board indicate gains or losses correlating with each spin result. A two-sided football game piece (lost from this set) is used to track movement up and down the field. The game was played in four quarters and with points (for touchdowns, place kicks, etc.) counted the same as in sport football games. The board game was patented January 6, 1925 by Success Composition and Printing Company and advertised Tone Bros. coffee. The entire front outer panel of the folded game board reads: "Tone's Tone's Tone's," and depicts a football player in mid stride holding a football as another player attempts to tackle him before a full stadium. The entire rear outer panel consists of an illustrated advertisement reading: "Tone's Golden Coffee: Champions in their class." EPH 5057

One game manufactured by Selchow & Righter Company. Players roll dice and move pieces across a board marked to represent promotions and demotions in rank for the four United States Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Corps. The player who reaches the center of the board first becomes Commander in Chief and leads the other players in the Pledge of Allegiance. EPH 5052

One game designed by Captain William J. Chapman and manufactured by Parker Brothers, Inc. Players spin and move pieces across a board marked to represent the challenges of flying a plane into an airport using only radio signals. EPH 5045

American-made manual dexterity board game depicting the atomic bombing of Japan in 1945. The object of the game is to maneuver two plastic capsules containing a weighted metal ball into holes in a map of Japan representing Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two cities destroyed by atomic bombs dropped by the United States. Tokyo is also labeled on the map without any corresponding target hole. The black and yellow cardboard surface of the game features a map of Japan and an oversized bomb labeled “Atomic Bomb” falling from the sky. The bomb and the map are surrounded by explosion lines. The top of the game surface reads: “The A. C. Gilbert Company, New Haven, Conn., U.S.A., Printed in U.S.A.” The game is enclosed in a thin blue aluminum case with a small plate of glass over the top.
