Summer Scholars - Marketing for the Common Good (Essig/Olsen)

Introduction

Each team will be conducting a search in or utilizing a specific resource made available by the library. Your task as a group is to make use of a database as instructed below, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the resource, and elect a spokesperson from your team to demonstrate the resource and your evaluation to the class. Consider the following questions in your evaluation:

  • How would you describe the types of materials you can find in this database?

  • Is the database or resource easy to search?
    • Do results seem relevant to your search?
    • How do you save useful information once you've found it in this database?
  • Is there any information you found while searching that could be applied to the 5C's model?
  • What, in your team's opinion, are some of the weaknesses of the assigned resource?

Activity

Team 1 - Apple

  • Access the database Nexis Uni

  • Using the resource provided, find the ESG rating that Apple Inc. earned for Energy and Climate Change according to CSRHub ESG ratings in March of 2024

Team 2 - Whirlpool

  • Access Business Insights: Essentials

  • Using the database provided, find out who the first customer of the company that became Whirlpool was.

  • Bonus: If you have spare time, try to find a SWOT analysis for Whirlpool in the database

Team 3 - McDonalds

  • Access the database Mergent Intellect

  • Find how much money the Global Chief Impact Officer of McDonald's made as a bonus in 2023

  • Bonus: If you have time, attempt to download McDonald's most current 10-k form

Team 4 - Owens Corning

  • Access the database IBISWorld

  • Using the resource provided, find the revenue generated by non-wood roofing products and non-wood siding products. Which is greater?

  • Bonus: If you have time, can you determine what the most applicable NAICS code for Owens Corning would be?

Team 5 - Coca Cola

  • Google the following phrase: Coca Cola Investor Relations and take the first link that appears

  • Using the resource provided, find what 3 countries were the primary driver of performance in Latin America for Coca Cola in the 1st quarter of 2024.

Team 6 - Starbucks

  • Access the database Mintel

  • Using the database provided, find what percentage of Generation X considered themselves a coffee enthusiast in 2023
