NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) and SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) codes are used to classify, categorize, and measure industry activity. The NAICS was created to be more comprehensive and accommodating of newer industries to replace the SIC. Resources for industry research still use both codes, so it is helpful to be aware of both. In many cases, advances in technology outpace updates to industry classification codes, so it may not always be clear what industry a particular product or company would fall under.
