Industry Overview and Analysis

The resources described here feature powerful industry content. These resources may have some overlap in coverage, but we encourage you to explore as many different types of industry reports as you can, so that your research is as well-informed as possible. While they may often seem similar in scope, their content will vary somewhat providing different insights. The majority of the recommended resources support keyword searching as well as industry look up by NAICS/SIC code.

Recommended Resources

IBISWorld
Industry reports in five categories: market research, risk ratings, company research, global industry research, and economic and demographic data. Standardized market research report components include overviews, industry performance and outlook, competitive landscape (including market share concentration), regulatory environment, major companies, operational conditions, and key statistics.
Mergent Intellect
Provides access to First Research industry reports. Search for a company, then look at the Industry Details tab. Click on the actual report icon to bring up the First Research Industry Report. Note that there may be multiple reports if your company is classified in multiple industries.
Business Insights: Essentials
Provides access to Plunkett Analytics industry reports. Select Plunkett Reports from the Industries tab at the top of the screen, Search Within Results by industry name/NAICS code, or search a company name then look at the Industries section in the company profile for industry essays and/or Plunkett reports.
ABI/Inform Trade and Industry
Provides access to domestic and international First Research industry reports in addition to articles from trade journals. Click on Browse, choose First Research for a list of industries to browse, or select Advanced Search, type an industry keyword in the search box, and look for Document type in the box down below. Find Industry Report and check the box. Click Search.
Mergent Online
Provides access to Investext for expert analyst reports on industry.
Business Source Complete
Provides access to MarketLine Industry Profiles and Barnes Reports. Click on Industry Profiles (far right) and then search/browse/download.
Mergent Archives
Provides access to in-depth analysis of key industries. Notable for its historical coverage, with full reports available from as far back as 2003. Also useful for its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) content, with ratings of leading companies within specific industries.
